Torquay Rivals 48 Hours From Big Shield Showdown

Upton Athletic are bidding to return from a three-year trophy drought by claiming the first silverware of the new SDFL season – the Throgmorton Charity Shield. This Wednesday (20th August), the former league heavyweights take on the might of quadruple-winning Watcombe Wanderers who won both the Premier Division and the Herald Cup last season. With their third-place finish, Upton were invited to compete in place of runners-up Brixham as Jason Couch’s promoted side were unavailable due to Peninsula League commitments. It is a repeat of the 2011 Charity Shield which saw League holders Athletic atone for their shock Herald Cup defeat by the then-Division Three outfit Watcombe, but it was the last time Upton won any silverware.
Tickets for the Charity Shield, held at Devon FA HQ, Coach Road, will be £4 (£2 concessions) with kick-off at 7.00pm

The draw for this season’s Herald Cup will take place before the match and be announced at half-time, when there will also be a bucket collection for the two nominated charities: the Newton Abbot based Community Transport Association and Torbay Street Pastors.
