Top South Devon Football Teams Kick-Off 2015/16 Campaigns

Torquay United, Buckland Athletic and all but two of South Devon’s SW Peninsula teams will all enter the footie fray this afternoon – and we at SSD will be keeping a close eye on proceedings.

TORQUAY UNITED line up against Macclesfield at the Launa Windows Stadium with striker Malachi Lavelle-Moore potentially turning out against his former club. The Gulls will have to recover from the massive blow of losing influential skipper Luke Young to a cruciate injury as they bid to land new boss Paul Cox an early three points. Macclesfield missed out on last year’s play-offs by a single point and were held 1-1 at Torquay last year, winning 1-0 at Moss Rose.

BUCKLAND ATHLETIC take on newly promoted Cribbs FC who hail from near Bristol (Cribbs Causeway is a well known shopping centre in that area). The Yellows will be looking for a good start as manager Adam Castle aims for promotion to the Southern League.

STOKE GABRIEL, now South Devon’s only SW Peninsula Premier team, will not play until next week, and BOVEY TRACEY, who were relegated from the division after just one win all season are also not playing tomorrow.

Otherwise, the remaining six SW Peninsula Division One East sides will get their seasons underway:

TEIGNMOUTH face a daunting trip to Tiverton Town Reserves who, despite only having just come up from the Devon & Exeter League are fancied to be among the title chasers. GALMPTON UNITED, who led the table for much of last season but finished fifth at the end of it host Okehampton Argyle, another top half team. Jason Couch’s BRIXHAM AFC go head to head with Justin Yeates’ LIVERTON UNITED in an early South Devon Derby, while TOTNES & DARTINGTON travel to Budleigh Salterton who shared a lower mid-table finishing spot with Tots. Finally, NEWTON ABBOT SPURS, who finished next to bottom last season will bid to improve things with a surprise result at runners-up Appledore.

And for those who are waiting for the South Devon Football League action to begin, the Throgmorton Charity Shield between BUCKLAND ATHLETIC RESERVES and WATCOMBE WANDERERS is scheduled for 7.30pm on Friday 14th August with the league resuming on 22nd.

And to see Ant Roach’s new look TORQUAY UNITED LADIES in league action you will need to wait until September.

Throughout the season, all TORQUAY UNITED action will be found under the relevant link on the menu bar, with all of the rest of the football action under the LOCAL FOOTBALL link (these pages are currently being updated and reorganised so are subject to change).

Enjoy the season – and keep in touch!
