Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup; Round Three:

Sam’s Strike Sends Solid Teigns Into Throgmorton Quarters

Match report by Martin Jones

Teignmouth had to be at their best to beat a good University side who came to Coombe valley on a run of ten consecutive victories in all competitions.

Both teams served up some good football on a sticky pitch; the students had the better of the early exchanges and struck the post in the 13th minute. Scott Baxter renewed his central defensive partnership with Scott Telford and his return, after seven games out through injury, tightened up Teigns back four and confidence spread through the team. In the 20th minute, Sam Chapman’s thumping drive was blocked by Uni’s ‘keeper. The visitors had a constant goal threat of their own and a looping cross beat Teigns ’keeper Liam Jones in the 32nd minute, but Steve Shrubb was in the right place to hack the loose ball clear. Teigns’ midfield quartet of Craig Stonelake, Ian Wilkinson, Isaac Reed and star man Finn Graham began to control the centre of the park and, as the first half entered stoppage time, Stonelake’s clipped pass put Chapman through on the right side of the penalty area; Chapman cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable left-foot drive that sped into the far corner of the net to open the scoring.

Teigns came out in the second half with purpose; another good shift from centre-forward Hayden Roe kept the visitors’ defence busy and Graham was unlucky not to have doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, but his first time volley flashed wide. Teigns were comfortably in control but with ten minutes remaining, they were reduced to ten men after Terry Breslan received a second yellow card. A decisive block tackle from Baxter in the 88th minute prevented Uni getting a shot on target and, right on time, the students wasted their best chance of the game by firing wide. A slice of luck and solid hard work saw Teigns triumph and progress to the next round.

This Saturday Teigns return to league action away to Okehampton kick off 2.15pm.

FT: Teignmouth 1 – 0 Exeter University
