MAP Host Torquay and Bucks Travel to Illogan in SWWFL

Torquay United have one last chance this season to get one over on Marine Academy Plymouth, the side who knocked them out of both the Pat Sowden and Devon Senior Cups and defeated them in the league.

Should the Gullettes win on Sunday they could seriously damage MAP’s treble hopes with the Plymouth side currently dead level with Yeovil Town Ladies Intermediaries at the top of the SWWFL Premier Division with two games each remaining. Western Division champions Buckland Athletic, who play MAP on April 7th in the Devon Senior Cup final at Coach Road, are away at Illogan in their penultimate league game.

Torquay United have endured a mixed couple of months. February started positively with Sian Chapman and Danielle Wyatt on target in a 2-0 home win over high-flying Bishops Lydeard. That league was followed by disappointment in the last eight of the Pat Sowden Cup as Samantha Drewery’s double for MAP brought the leaders their second success at the Western County Ground. Lowly Frome were unable to fulfil their league fixture, donating three points to the Gullette’s cause but there was disappointment to follow as United crashed 4-0 away at title-hunting Yeovil Ladies Intermediate, Jodi Cornwall, Jemma Tewkesbury, Olivia Watts and substitute Georgia Mann with the hosts’ goals. But Torquay responded superbly, bouncing back with a fine 5-0 home victory over Charlestown, Charlotte Dymond scoring twice and Emma Mingo, Jana Richards and Danielle Wyatt with the other goals. Can they build on that win by upsetting MAP on their turf on Sunday?

Buckland Athletic have been frustrated to be playing a game a month due to a mixture of teams failing to fulfil and wet pitches. Following their astonishing 4-2 victory over Plymouth Argyle on 22nd January, the Yellows had to wait until 19th February for their next match action with Newquay Celtic pulling out of their league match at Homers Heath. Despite this, Buckland enjoyed a 4-0 triumph in the Soccerworld League Cup over Callington Town, Laura Gough with a brace and Kirsty Caunter and Natalie Warman also finding the net. Then came another month’s wait as Buckland’s trip to Illogan was postponed. Their next game was away at Cheltenham Civil service in the semi-final of the Soccerworld League Cup and Buckland took their frustrations out on their hosts by romping to an 11-1  win, Kirsty Caunter with four goals, Hayley Chamberlain and Helen Kukor with doubles apiece and Laura Gough, Carla Staddon and substitute Corinne Potts with singles. After Sunday’s jaunt down to Cornwall, it will be time to focus on next Friday’s big SWH Devon Senior Cup final at Coach Road.

Buckland Reserves played in the final of the JDS Supplementary Cup on 24th March, also at Coach Road. They acquitted themselves well against Bideford Ladies but were narrowly beaten 2-1.
