Lewington Hat-Trick Sets Buckland off on Another Cup Run

Jared Lewington turned on the style to help Buckland send First Division Chard Town out of the Les Phillips Cup, the Yellows winning 5-2 at Homers Heath to make it into the Second Round draw.

It took just over quarter of an hour for Buckland to break the deadlock, Gavin Hammon’s superb pass setting up Lewington’s first. The on-fire striker almost scored again with a header from a Cliff Walters cross before he did double his tally, Richard Groves providing the final ball in after a well-worked team build-up. There was time for Lewington to wrap up his hat-trick and put himself top of Buckland’s goalscorers’ list before the break to leave the hosts with one foot in the second round by the interval.

Three became four six minutes after the restart, Simon Revell’s pass picking out defender Walters who slotted home in the corner past Kieran Bailey in the visiting goal. Hammon made it 5-0, moving back level with Lewington in the goals stakes, with a 68th minute strike. There was still time for two more goals but both of those went to the visitors, Max Westlake intercepting a bad back-pass with ten minutes remaining and substitute Martin Scott with a second for Chard three minutes later. But there was to be no fantasy comeback for the Somerset side who exit the competition.
