Most people associated with Sport South Devon were buzzing after yesterday’s shock 2-1 win over the Premier giants of West Bromwich Albion with the likes of Saido Berahino, Jonas Olsson, Ben Foster and Darren Fletcher all in action.
Spare a thought however for Devon-born boxing star and massive Baggies fan Tommy Langford. Tommy contributes to our monthly column ‘The Contenders,’ which rounds up the exploits of our three wandering boxing champs (Langford, Jamie Speight and Ben Day).
Langford, who recently earned himself the chance to dethrone current British Middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr, took a break from his preparations to react to yesterday’s result.
“Obviously, the results against Plymouth and Torquay were both disappointing from my West Brom fan perspective,” admitted Langford. “Just one goal in two games and a draw and a loss; it’s not good against lower league teams. Very frustrating watching those matches as a West Brom FC fan and I think we have got some serious improvements to make before the season starts.

“But the pain is not quite so bad because it’s against a Devonshire team and it was only a friendly. I used to go and watch those teams regularly and my dad was always quite involved in those teams a while back – he was a coach of the youth development squad at Exeter City.
“I know Darren Moore, who used to play for Torquay United, and I actually played with him in a charity football match that my dad organised at Hartlands FC. I’ve still got the programme from the day as a keepsake. So, we are all very fond of Torquay and all Devonshire!”
