Midweek Roundup & Today’s Football Fixtures – September 19th

The shock departure of Paul Cox has cast a shadow over the future of South Devon’s number one club, but the other Yellows, Buckland Athletic, are going from strength to strength. On Wednesday evening Adam Castle’s Western League leaders racked up a sixth successive league victory of which five, including the last three, have involved clean sheets. Grant Fisher played his full part in that last stat, tipping over James Billing’s header after visitors Shepton Mallet had weathered a first half storm with Lloyd Gardner starring and Si Laughton, Jared Lewington and Gavin Hammon testing Dan Fox in the Mallet goal. Will Hailston also saw his long-range shot fly just wide as Shepton Mallet sought to punish Bucks for not taking their chances. After the break, the visitors pressed even harder, but Buckland hit them on the counter, Lewis Perring setting Gardner away whose fine run ended with a cross-shot past Fox. The goal heralded another home onslaught with Hammon and Si Revell close to doubling the advantage. But Shepton Mallet stayed strong at the back and, had Liam Drew not cleared away Ben Lacey’s dangerous cross, might have clinched an equaliser. As it was, the home side enjoyed another 1-0 win and are now a healthy five points clear of Bath side Odd Down, albeit having played a game more. Today’s opponents, fifth-placed Bitton, will be a tough prospect away from home, although the Gloucestershire side have picked up just one point in their last two matches.

There was also some much-needed good news for Stoke Gabriel in midweek, the Railwaymen finally getting their first win with a single goal away at Elburton Villa and enabling them to leapfrog their hosts on goal difference. The manner of the win will also have pleased Tim Porter as Stoke dominated the first quarter, home ‘keeper Ryan Rickard by far the busier of the two. Ollie Aplin and Gareth McEwan forced Rickard into several saves in the first half, and on-form Dan Kingscote struck the post and headed wide, Villa only mustering a weak Robbie Mann effort in response. But Elburton’s goal was somehow unbreached at the break and the hosts put in a better performance at the start of the second half, Zack Wheeler testing Dan Law in the visiting goal. The Railwaymen also suffered the loss of Dave Worthington through injury. The deadlock was finally broken by Aplin on 71 minutes; sub Tom Kelly caused havoc in the home box with a cross and Aplin was on hand to fire home a partial clearance. Elburton responded well, Frazer Clark clearing off the line and Aaron Hulme making a nuisance of himself in the final ten minutes, but Stoke held on for the three points.

The final midweek action came at Tiverton Town Reserves, where Newton Abbot Spurs went down by a single goal. There highly-fancied hosts pressed hard for most of the match, Ethan Phillips and Dave O’Connor with the best of them, but Spurs’ task was made more difficult by the loss of both Darryl Kewley, through injury, and Tom Sercombe, who picked up a second yellow for dissent. The decisive moment came with just five minutes left, Lloyd Copp looping a header over Scott Bellamy.
