Glenn Matthews produced a low driven cross on 11 minutes from the left hand side which should have been cleared easily by United’s full back Ives but his poor attempt fell nicely to Tony Gray and his right footed low shot found its way into the bottom right hand corner.
The Gulls should have equalised a minute later when John Campbell saw his right footed effort from the middle of penalty area tipped over well by Hall in the visitors goal, after a slide rule pass from Young.
