United Ladies Progress In FA Cup

Torquay United’s men may have fallen to a defeat on Saturday but the ladies did not disappoint as they progressed to the next round of the FA Cup following a convincing 5-1 victory over Ilminster Town on Sunday.

The Gullettes changed to a 4-1-3-2 formation to try and address the issues of conceding three goals per game so far this season and the tactical alteration  provided a solid foundation for the match as United found themselves ahead after 8 minutes, a shot from Natalie Warman from the edge of the area was somehow pushed into the net by the Ilminster keeper.

The goals continued to flow in the first period with the free scoring Laura Gough making it 2-0 on 20 minutes, with a fantastic 25 yard strike over the keeper. Gough’s strike partner Sian Chapman then scored a quick fire brace on 25 and 27 minutes before Gough got her second of the game and eighth of the season on 30 minutes and effectively wrapped up the tie with still a quarter of the first half remaining.

The second half as expected with the half time score was a non-event but the Torquay continued to play their neat passing football and if it wasn’t for a very contentious penalty decision on 59 minutes the Gullettes would have kept a well deserved clean sheet.

United’s manager Ant Roach was delighted with the result and his sides performance. “I asked them before the game to get the match won in the first half and to put all the hard work on training ground, onto the pitch. It was important that we really concentrated on keeping our shape and more importantly a clean sheet, if it wasn’t for a very dubious penalty, then that clean sheet would have been achieved”.

“The ladies as always have done themselves and the club proud today and we will now take this into our next league game against Frome at home on Sunday and also look forward to being in the draw for the next round of the cup” Roach added.
